Retinol Cream
Retinol creams are topical vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) commonly used for acne and anti-aging. In the skin, retinol is converted into active retinoic-acid forms that influence cell turnover, collagen signaling, and inflammation, which is why it can improve texture and breakouts—but also why it commonly causes irritation, dryness, peeling, and sensitivity, especially when first started or used too often.
In the context of PFS/PSSD/PAS, retinol is discussed because it sits in the same vitamin A / retinoid pathway as Accutane (isotretinoin), even though topical exposure is typically much lower than oral Accutane. Because of symptom overlap and community reports, many people treat retinoids as a higher-risk topical: some report flares/crashes or destabilization after using retinol/retinoid products, and choose to avoid them—especially if they’ve reacted to Accutane or other retinoids in the past.

My Personal Risk Ranking:
Low Risk of Permanent Worsening (for PFS/PSSD/PAS):
If you currently have PFS/PSSD/PAS, this substance may carry a low risk of permanently worsening symptoms, but still has a moderate chance of flaring condition or preventing recovery based on anecdotes. The substance is best avoided.
